OIG Professions and Standards

OIG professions follow Quality Standards:
Quality standards for audits, investigations, evaluation, inspections, evaluations, management, operations and conduct in Federal OIGs.

Audit Department Mission

The audit unit is led by the Assistant Inspector General for Audit. The unit directs the LSC audit program reviewing LSC and grantee programs and operations. The unit oversees the grantee audit process, including providing audit guidance, tracking IPA findings and corrective action and the audit Quality Control Review (QCR’s) Program. It also performs financial, compliance and performance audits.


Investigation Department Mission

The investigation unit is led by the Assistant Inspector general for Investigations. The unit supervises the proactive Fraud and Non-Compliance prevention program; actively investigates instances of fraud, waste, abuse and mismanagement involving LSC and its grant recipients programs, operations and personnel; and, reports results to appropriate authorities.

Due to the nature of its work, various products from the Investigations department can’t be disclosed to the public.


Legal Department

Provides legal advice to OIG staff; represents the OIG in litigation; assists in the prosecution of enforcement matters; processes subpoenas, responds to Freedom of Information Act  requests; and suspends or debars IPAs from auditing LSC grantees as needed. The unit also reviews and comments on legislation, regulations and policies effecting LSC and its operations.

Management and Evaluation Mission

The Management and Evaluation department’s mission is to provide management, guidance, and resources in support of the OIG. We oversee a diverse portfolio, which includes:

Budget formulation and management:

  • Policy and planning including the development of OIG policies and planning and advisory responsibilities in the development or revision of LSC Management policies
  • Management of OIG acquisitions
  • Human capital planning, including coordination with the LSC HR department on recruiting, staffing, training, and performance management;
  • Information technology and information management solutions, including the maintenance and development of the OIG  IT infrastructure and information management systems
  • Administrative services, including space management and travel.
  • Evaluations which offer practical recommendations to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of LSC programs, with a focus on preventing fraud, waste, and abuse.

The Management and Evaluation department creates various products that are mostly designed for internal distribution and can’t be disclosed to the public.
